Inundated by the threats of rising tides, contaminated sources, and pent up rivers, water is still a connective substance. From Flint to Fukushima and beyond, this exhibition brings together artists who work with the medium and its many currents, ebbs, and flows to explore the kinds of social relations that are possible across troubled waters. Can shared experiences of toxicity create solidarities that exceed the boundaries of the local? Conceiving of the gallery as a littoral space between water and land, this exhibition brings together artists who emphasize water’s transitory qualities and the suspended state between hope and despair in the Anthropocene. In Overflow, we pose the question of how we might create more fluid understandings of kin.
